Leaders heading into 2023 are facing more “uncertainty” than ever. They are challenged by economic issues, retention issues, and dispersed teams with more polarized viewpoints than ever.
Leaders are now being required to look through a VUCA lens: volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. These issues will undoubtedly shape their priorities for the New Year.
Management consulting firm Gartner surveyed more than 800 human resources leaders across 60 countries and all major industries to identify the top 5 HR priorities for CHROs and their executive teams.
In 2022, the Gartner top HR priorities for leaders were “critical skills and competency development, organization design and change management, current and future leadership bench, the future of work, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.”
The top priorities for 2023 are leader and manager effectiveness. You can view the full report here.
The report says “Leader and manager effectiveness tops the list of human resources trends, but HR leaders will also prioritize change management, employee experience, recruiting and future of work initiatives.”
At a glance, it could seem like the top priorities are making a shift from diversity, equity, and inclusion because the 2023 report doesn’t use those terms upfront, but the employee experience is in fact directly linked to inclusive practices.
This survey makes it clear that we need to invest in developing inclusive leaders today, this coming year, and in years to come.
